The Problem we address:

It is well known that South Africa faces a profound and highly complex education crisis. It is characterised by low levels of academic achievement, infrastructure disparities, inadequate support for teachers and high dropout rates, fueling extreme and persistent societal inequality. This is then compounded by a myriad of socio-economic problems across the country.

The most devastating impacts of this crisis are seen in the foundational phase, where two shocking statistics are frequently cited:

1) Crisis of comprehension: 8 out of every 10 learners in Grade 4 in South Africa cannot read for meaning in any language!

2) Crisis of Retention: Half of the learners who start school will not complete their education!

It is clear that urgent action is needed. Research shows that with consistent, non-specialised reading support from a literate person, learners can get back on track and read at their grade level. At the Classroom Collective, we believe that the most effective solution to the education crisis is South Africa’s people and communities. You can be the solution to the gaps in the education system by volunteering to be a Reading Champion at your local Primary School.

Together, we can bridge the gaps in the education system and ensure that every learner reaches their potential. Let’s build a THRIVING literate South Africa!
